The top eight players of the season qualified for the event with Serena Williams leading a pack including Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep, Eugenie Bouchard, Agnieszka Radwanska, Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki.
Williams—the 2014 U.S. Open champion—is aiming for her third consecutive victory in the event and her fifth overall and the American world No. 1 is raring to go, per The Associated Press, via Yahoo Sports:
"I don't care who I play, to be perfectly honest with you," Williams said. "You can put me against anybody at this point, I'm ready."
Of the other contenders, only Kvitova and Sharapova have also claimed the prestigious gong in previous years as they won the title in 2011 and 2004 respectively.
The eight women are split into two round-robin groups for the first rounds of play, with the top two proceeding from each pool to the semi-finals.
Debutants Halep and Bouchard join Williams and Ivanovic in the Red group while Radwanska, Wozniacki, Kvitova and Sharapova make up the White group.
The Singapore Indoor Stadium is a new venue for the WTA Finals after three years in Istanbul but should prove a big draw.
Sharapova could end the season as the world No. 1 if she wins every match on her way to tournament victory, but Kvitova, and obviously Williams, will likely prove her main contenders.
