Inconsistent over his first two matches, top-seeded Richard Gasquet finally met his match in John Millman.
The unseeded Australian recorded eight aces and broke Gasquet five times on his way to a 7-5, 6-3 upset. Neither player was especially strong on his serve, with both putting less than 60 percent of their first serves in play; Gasquet won just 52 percent of his service points for the match.
“It was tough out there,” Millman said, per John Delong of the tournament's official website. “Obviously I’ve got a lot of respect for Richard. I grew up watching him play. I love the way he plays. So to be able to compete with him today and go out there and beat him is very satisfying. I’m extremely proud of myself.”
Millman battled back from being down a break in the first set on two occasions, taking the final three games to win 7-5.
“I’m never one to give up,” Millman said. “I’ll only stop trying when the match is over. It was difficult, but I was determined to not give up and hang in there, and finally I got momentum. And momentum’s a really big thing in tennis.”
Gasquet struggled to regain his composure after losing the first set, with Millman taking advantage of an early break to pull away. The Frenchman was making his return to the sport for the first time since Wimbledon, where he suffered a back injury that put him on the shelf for more than a month.
