Two-time champion John Isner enters the week as the top seed as the Greensboro, North Carolina, native remains a local favorite among the fans. The American spoke about this having an impact on his play at this tournament, via the Winston-Salem Journal:
It’s very exciting. For me, coming home, I’ve always played well here. I’ve played it twice and I haven’t lost, so there’s something about being at home. It helps me so much. Having the crowd on my side really cheering me on, it’s a home court advantage for sure.
That’s one of the reasons I’ve done so well in this tournament, and I’m looking forward it. I can’t wait to get back.
The American is going for a career-high three individual titles this season with the other two wins also coming on hard courts. With his serving ability, he certainly has a chance to win a championship and gain some serious momentum heading into the fourth Grand Slam of the year.
Of course, a run to the finals will not be easy. Top competitors like Kevin Anderson, Tommy Robredo, Leonardo Mayer and others have the ability to come through with strong performances to bring home their own championship.
Robredo is coming off a strong showing in Cincinnati where he defeated Novak Djokovic en route to a spot in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Mayer is coming off a title win in Hamburg where he defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber and David Ferrer.
