Kei Nishikori needed four sets to get past Julien Benneteau, and David Ferrer won just eight games in a three-set loss against Nicolas Mahut.
In the women's draw, Samantha Stosur lost in two sets to Sabine Lisicki, and Venus Williams needed three sets to get past qualifier Maria Sakkari. In the biggest shock of the day, French Open champion Garbine Muguruza lost to qualifier Jana Cepelova in less than an hour.

Recap Murray shook off a poor start to cruise past Lu Thursday, dropping three of the first four games but rebounding with a strong performance. The former Wimbledon champion needed less than two hours to book his spot in the third round.
Lu beat Murray at the Olympics in 2008 but hasn't taken a set against the Scot since, and he was thoroughly outclassed Thursday. The 32-year-old couldn't keep up in the rallies, although he scored a handful of excellent points with his direct approach.
As reported by the BBC (h/t the Telegraph's Charlie Eccleshare), Murray admitted he struggled in the opening set:
The first set was tough. There were a lot of close games, I managed to hang on at the end of the first and then settled down towards the end of the second and was hitting the ball much better in the third and feeling more comfortable.
If you can win matches easily it does help because you can rest. It has been a good start. I will just try and do my best - work hard, keep my head down and hopefully have a good tournament.
