With 2011 end-of-year world No. 2 Rafael Nadal unlikely to play again competitively this year due to recurrent knee injury, only Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray can realistically finish the year in the top spot.
Fresh from winning his first Grand Slam in New York, and the Olympic gold medal at London 2012, world No. 3 Andy Murray currently has 8750 ATP points to his name.
The fall of 2011 saw Murray win consecutive titles at Bangkok, Tokyo and Shanghai—that in itself is a lot of points to defend, particularly for someone like Murray whose form can be so inconsistent.
Were Murray to win the Masters 1000 events in Shanghai and Paris, then the ATP World Tour Finals in London, he would, depending on the results of Federer and Djokovic, almost certainly end 2012 world No. 1. But realistically is that going to happen? In my opinion, no.
It seems unlikely Murray will be able to catch No. 2 ranked Djokovic who currently has 10,470 ATP points; a lead over the Scot of 1720, before the end of the year.
A two-horse race
Up until and including the 2011 U.S. Open, Djokovic had an incredible year winning 10 tournaments. Following his victory in the U.S. final over Nadal however, for the remainder of 2011, Nole simply ran out of physical and mental energy, and failed to win another event until the 2012 Australian Open.
This is bad news for current world No. 1 Roger Federer who has 11,805 ATP ranking points—a lead over the Serbinator of just 1,335.
Djokovic has relatively few points to defend for the rest of the ATP season, and plenty still available to him, in order to regain the No. 1 ranking, which he lost to Federer following this year’s Wimbledon.
