Perhaps Federer’s insane brilliance spoiled us. Perhaps too much pressure has been placed on the very talented, but very raw youngsters of the game. Perhaps we are all simply too hard to please.

No doubt Serbia’s own Novak Djokovic would agree with all of the above mentioned thoughts. After all, we have been patiently waiting for the talented Serb to explode and challenge Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for Grand Slam Singles titles.

We first caught sight of young Djokovic in 2005. He was kid, barely out of diapers, but possessing a level of ball striking on par with the very best in the world. It was at Roland Garros that raised eyebrows by taking it to 2004 Roland Garros Finalist and former clay court king Guillermo Coria in the first set before retiring at a set all in the third due to breathing problems.

The “Djoker” as he was nicknamed for comical and sometimes court jester-like personality made a steady climb in the rankings. By 2007 he was a legitimate star, having had multiple chances in the Final of the U.S. Open against world number one Roger Federer. He’d also earned the distinction of being the only player that year to defeat both Federer and Nadal in a Final.

Then, 2008 was supposed to be the year; the year Djokovic took his game to the next level. Though ranked third, many people felt that Djokovic was the second best player in the world behind Federer. Many even thought that it was only a matter of time before the young Serb caught Roger Federer and presented a true challenge.

In a blockbuster semi-final at the 2008 Australian Open, Djokovic got another crack at Federer in a major.

Though in all fairness, Federer was fighting off the effects on mononucleosis and was probably not physically 100 percent; Djokovic played a perfect match from start to finish as he defeated the Swiss in straight sets. Djokovic downed Jo Wilfred Tsonga in a four set final to capture h...
