No. 15 Karolina Pliskova Def. No. 4 Garbine Muguruza Karolina Pliskova upset No. 4-seeded Garbine Muguruza in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 in a match that took just one hour.
On Sunday, she will become the first woman from the Czech Republic to ever compete in a Western & Southern Open final, per Tom Groeschen of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Groeschen noted that at No. 17 in the WTA's rankings, she became the lowest-ranked player to make this final since 2008.
Muguruza was able to build momentum with her service game, as she recorded five aces on the day while winning 20 of 28 first-serve points.
With that momentum, Pliskova continued to push the pace, ensuring that Muguruza wouldn't get comfortable while stymieing any chances of a comeback.
No. 2 Angelique Kerber Def. No. 3 Simona Halep Just one week removed from her silver-medal performance at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Angelique Kerber clinched her spot in Sunday's final with a win in straight sets over No. 3-seeded Simona Halep, 6-3, 6-4.
Kerber managed to keep her intensity up despite a 33-minute rain delay, winning 71 percent of her service points and 45 percent of her return points.
Heading into Saturday, she needed two wins to pass Serena Williams for No. 1 in the world rankings, which means there will be more than a title on the line against Pliskova.
But she's not putting much thought into it, per Joe Kay of the Associated Press.
"One match away, still a long way to go," she said.
