The quarterfinals on both sides featured some players who recently made it back from the biggest sporting event in the world.
Fresh off her silver-medal performance at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Angelique Kerber returned to the WTA Tour in strong fashion, defeating Carla Suarez Navarro to make it to the semifinals.
With a lot of tennis and traveling under her belt, Kerber started out slow, dropping the first set, but she hit another gear in the second and third sets to close out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win.
She managed to pull out the win despite recording 10 double-faults, making up for them with her brilliant play on break points. Of 19 opportunities, she saved 16.
Kerber is now two wins away from overtaking Serena Williams as the world's No. 1 women's tennis player, as the WTA showed:
In order to do so, she'll have to take down Simona Halep in the semifinals Saturday. Simona defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-1. The other women's semifinal will feature Karolina Pliskova against Garbine Muguruza.
Olympic men's singles gold medalist Andy Murray didn't have much trouble in the night's finale against Bernard Tomic, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The Scotsman used his big serve to dominate the match, collecting 10 aces on the evening while winning 85 percent of his first-serve points.
