Stan Wawrinka made his return after skipping out on the Olympics. Gael Monfils, John Isner and David Goffin were among the notable names in action in men's singles play. In the women's singles draw, 15th-seeded Karolina Pliskova kicked off her tournament.

Tuesday Results
Tuesday Recap The men's draw provided few surprises. Goffin, Monfils, Richard Gasquet and Feliciano Lopez all advanced, with Gasquet the only one of the four failing to win in straight sets.
Wawrinka dropped the first set 2-6 to American qualifier Jared Donaldson but opened a 3-0 lead in the second before tournament officials suspended play for the night.
The No. 2 seed had a dreadful start, committing 16 unforced errors and allowing four break-point opportunities in the first set alone, per TennisTV. Wawrinka righted the ship in the second, though. A long break could work in Donaldson's benefit, since it halts the momentum Wawrinka began building Tuesday night.
Isner rode his big serve to a straight-sets victory over Fabio Fognini. The 31-year-old won 82 percent of his first-service points and picked up 12 aces. Making matters worse for Fognini, he was suffering from a blister on his foot in the second set, per TennisTV:
