Djokovic reached the final with a bizarre four-set win over Gael Monfils. Wawrinka weathered an early storm to defeat Nishikori in the semifinal and reach his first-ever U.S. Open final.
Here's the schedule for the U.S. Open final between Djokovic and Wawrinka:
Final Prediction
Under normal circumstances, Djokovic would be the favorite in a head-to-head matchup against Wawrinka.
These, however, are not normal circumstances. Djokovic has had shoulder problems throughout the U.S. Open, including taking a medical timeout in the fourth set against Monfils so a trainer could work on his right shoulder.
It was apparent throughout the semifinal match that Djokovic was not right, with CNN World Sport's Ravi Ubha tweeting out how one stat illustrated how bad the world's best player was serving against Monfils:
Monfils actually helped Djokovic out by appearing disinterested in trying to win the match. He did take over in the third set to keep hope alive but was caught going to sit in his chair during the fourth set when there was no changeover.
Djokovic was also battling hot and humid temperatures on the court that contributed to his poor performance in the semifinal. Things don't look any better for Sunday, with Weather.com projecting a high temperature of 86 degrees with a humidity index of 56 percent.
One thing working in Djokovic's favor is that injuries to his opponents throughout the tournament have made it so he's only had to play 13 full sets to win six matches. Even though he's physically ailing right now, his legs are as fresh as any player on the men's or women's side after two weeks of action.
