This match had the look of inevitability as far back as July, when Djokovic took down Federer in the Wimbledon championship round in four sets. The two players split the first two sets. But Djokovic seemed to have more stamina, and he executed a bit better in the third and fourth sets to earn the sport's most honored title.
But Federer didn't merely accept that loss, shrug his shoulders and move on. Instead, he has elevated his game.
The next time Federer competed, his outstanding serve appeared to improve. He dominated the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati and didn't lose a single game while serving throughout the tournament. That culminated in the championship round when he defeated Djokovic in straight sets.
Federer and Djokovic have a long-standing and nearly equal personal rivalry. Federer has won 21 of their 41 matches, and both men seem to bring out the best in each other.
