Williams would respond as she took the second set much easier and kept the possibilities for the calendar Slam in order with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win. Service accuracy was an issue in the first set. Williams double-faulted eight times in the first frame, which created some difficulty.
Venus dropped the second set to Irina Falconi before her powerful serve and experience proved to be too much for her opponent, as she rebounded to win, 6-3, 6-7 (7-2), 6-2. The Williams sisters are still on course for a potential quarterfinals meeting if both can continue to win.
Next up for Serena is a third-round match with Bethanie Mattek-Sands. On Wednesday, Mattek-Sands knocked off Coco Vandeweghe, 6-2, 6-1. The two women have played twice before in their careers, but it's been more than seven years since they last met.
Williams won both of the previous matches, with the last one taking place at the 2008 Wimbledon championships. Mattek-Sands will be doing her best to pull off her first win over Williams and, in the process, stop history.
Venus will have a slightly stiffer challenge when she faces 12th-seeded Belinda Bencic. Williams has won each of the previous matches against Bencic, but the veteran knows she can’t take her opponent lightly.
