Men's Early Scores
No. 5 Stan Wawrinka opened the day on the men's draw with a win that was shaky at times but ultimately decisive over Donald Young.
Wawrinka controlled the match with his power, ripping 11 aces, winning 81 percent of his first-serve points and smashing 52 winners to just 14 for Young. He also took advantage of the rare opportunities Young afforded him, winning all four of the break points he earned against the scrappy American while also rushing the net with success, winning 20 of his 31 net points.
His powerful backhand in the third set, shared by U.S. Open Tennis on Twitter, was indicative of the entire match:
He did drop the second set, winning just one game, so it wasn't all dominance from the French Open winner. If nothing else, he certainly was entertaining to watch on the day, as Joe Posnanski of NBC Sports noted:
Wawrinka will face the winner of No. 3 Andy Murray and No. 15 Kevin Anderson.
Women's Early Scores
There weren't many surprises on the women's draw during the early play on Monday at the U.S. Open, as No. 2 Simona Halep, No. 20 Victoria Azarenka and No. 26 Flavia Pennetta all advanced.
While Azarenka and Pennetta were each tested, they both won in straight sets. Halep had a more difficult task on her hands against No. 24 Sabine Lisicki, however, dropping a first-set tiebreaker before rallying to win the next two sets.
