Along with Wozniacki's pivotal victory, Gilles Simon also upset a top-ranked player of his own. Facing off with No. 4 David Ferrer, Simon went four sets with the Spaniard to make his way to the fourth round.
Another potential upset was also taking shape as play was suspended between Marcel Granollers and No. 2 Roger Federer. Granollers was leading 5-2 in the first set as the two players left the court due to inclement weather.
But after a slight intermission, Federer returned and routed Granollers the rest of the way. Ben Rothenberg of The New York Times took a look at the interesting scene as Federer returned to the court:

Wozniacki Triumphs Over Sharapova
A former world No. 1 player, Wozniacki has been far from that in recent years. But with her recent play on the court, it's clear she's rounding back into form.
Sunday marked one of the most crucial victories of her still-young career over Sharapova. Heading into the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows, Rothenberg noted just how significant the win was for Wozniacki:
Though her serve wasn't overpowering, finishing with just three aces overall, Wozniacki played a much cleaner game than Sharapova. The 24-year-old notched just two double faults to eight by her Russian opponent.
