Sunday's action at the 2014 U.S. Open had a little bit of everything: upsets, great back-and-forth matches and a little intrigue courtesy of Mother Nature.

As noted by the tournament's Twitter account, play was halted during the late afternoon and early evening after thunderstorms hit Flushing, New York:

Although that changed some fans' Sunday plans, the delay didn't throw things off too much for the competitors. In fact, some of the players used the delay to their advantage, hitting the reset button before hitting the court again.

Sunday was certainly a lively way to end the first week of the 2014 U.S. Open.

Caroline Wozniacki Looks Like Champion Material Again

Coincidentally, it was at the U.S. Open that Caroline Wozniacki first burst onto the scene. Heading into the 2009 edition, the furthest she'd gone in a Grand Slam was the fourth round. That year, she made it to the final, losing to Kim Clijsters.

After she made a few semifinals and quarterfinals, Wozniacki looked like the newest star in women's tennis. Instead, her recent Grand Slam results are littered with early exits and unfulfilled promise.

With a three-set win over Maria Sharapova, the 24-year-old Dane advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in a little over two years, thus almost immediately erasing all the doubts about her game.

Second serves helped to decide the match. According to the tournament's official website, Sharapova won a paltry nine of her 26 second-service points, compared to 19 of 35 for Wozniacki. The five-time Grand Slam champion also committed 43 unforced errors.

Sharapova was introspective after the loss and joked that if she could've stayed on a court a little longer, then a rain delay could've offered her a reprieve:
