Let’s dig into some predictions for a couple of the top matches.
Serena Williams vs. Taylor Townsend
Talk about getting thrown into the spotlight.
Taylor Townsend, who reached the third round of the French Open and received a wild card for the U.S. Open, will face off against No. 1 Serena Williams. The 18-year-old Townsend is reportedly friends with the 17-time Grand Slam champion, but that probably won’t help her against the tournament’s favorite.
Williams discussed the match when asked what Arthur Ashe would think of the pairing, via NBC Chicago: "I think he would be really proud and honored to see so many young African-American players doing so well and playing so hard and just being role models for even the next generation."
While Townsend certainly has a bright future, she is not going to win Tuesday.
Williams has far too much momentum on her side. In fact, she’s won 12 of her past 13 matches and has five titles under her belt this season. She is coming off of championships at Stanford and Cincinnati and reached the semifinals in Montreal as well.
Despite those accolades, Williams has actually faltered at the Grand Slams this year. She is yet to make it out of the fourth round at a major, but that is likely to change in Flushing Meadows. She is the two-time defending champion here and is playing her best tennis of the season.
