Rafael Nadal defeats Ryan Harrison, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2
Coming into the U.S. Open, Rafael Nadal was 15-0 on hard courts this summer. Add another win to that total after he dismantled American challenger Ryan Harrison in straight sets.
Harrison struggled and beat himself as badly as Rafa beat him, making 34 unforced errors and connecting on just 62 percent of his first serves. Nadal capitalized on his second-chance serves, winning 71 percent of those opportunities, according to AP reporting (via CBS New York).
Serena Williams annihilates Francesca Schiavone, 6-0, 6-1
It took until the fifth game of the second set for the challenger to win her first game against top seed and defending Open champion Serena Williams. Sometimes that can be a moral victory.
At least she could find some comfort in her impending defeat. Francesca Schiavone hugged a ball boy while trailing 0-6, 0-2 in the second set. But her humor in the moment and late rally wasn’t enough to topple or even contend with Williams at her best.
And she was in top form on Monday in New York.
