US Open Tennis 2013: Day 1 Scores, Results, and Recap

Day 1 of the U.S. Open is in the books, and although it mostly went according to plan, it wasn't short on excitement. 

Several top names were in action from New York on Monday, as Serena Williams began her quest to defend her title of the year's final major, Rafael Nadal continued his white-hot play from the past month and David Ferrer, Agnieszka Radwanska and Li Na all looked ready to make a deep run.

Roger Federer, however, didn't get a chance to mimic that domination, as he saw his opening match delayed by Mother Nature. 

Throw in purple-haired Venus Williams looking more like the Venus who has two U.S. Open titles than the one who hasn't made it past the fourth round at a major the past three years, and it was a thrilling first day from Flushing Meadows.

Most of the Top Seeds Advance



Not only were there a minimal amount of shocking results on Monday, but there were a fair amount of transcending ones from the top seeds.

Serena Williams nearly double-bageled Francesca Schiavone in a clinical performance, Rafael Nadal easily handled American Ryan Harrison and Agnieszka Radwanska lost just three games against Silvia Soler-Espinosa.



The best players in the world came to play.
