2014 has been a topsy-turvy year for tennis. In the men's game, the old order seems to have been dethroned to an extent—though you would hardly bet against Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray controlling the Slams once more next year—while in the women's there were rising stars and career comebacks galore.

In terms of feel-good storylines, there are plenty to choose from.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni's—once tipped as a future No. 1 during the late 1990s—shock fourth-round display at the U.S. Open was a personal highlight, though perhaps a little too insignificant in the grand scheme of things to make the cut.

As such, it is the larger themes that have cropped up this season—with over-riding significance, perhaps, for the coming years—which I have selected.

Wozniacki Back on the Warpath

Wasn’t it great to have Caroline Wozniacki back at the top of her game?

Nicknamed “Sunshine” on tour because of her propensity to smile (and what a lovely smile it is), the former world No. 1 had looked a shadow of her former self, falling to No. 18 in the rankings.

But her high-profile breakup with golfer Rory McIlroy in May seemed to provide the impetus required to raise her game.

After winning her first title of the year in Istanbul, she headed to the U.S. Open in good shape, progressing past the fourth-round of a Grand Slam for the first time since the 2012 Australian Open and ultimately losing to her friend Serena Williams in the final.

She backed that up by qualifying for the WTA Finals, where she won all three round-robin matches—including one of the standout matches of the year versus Maria Sharapova, helping deny the Russian a shot at the year-end No. 1 spot—before once again being ousted by Williams despite serving for the match.
