American Jack Sock kept his hopes of winning in Basel, Switzerland, alive by dominating France's Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3, while seventh-seeded Richard Gasquet was forced to retire in the second set of his clash against Guido Pella.
Pablo Carreno Busta also notched a comfortable straight-sets win over Fernando Verdasco, beating his Spanish compatriot 7-5, 6-3, and Mischa Zverev dominated American Taylor Fritz 7-6 (3), 6-0.

Recap After spending three weeks on the sidelines with an injury, Nishikori continued his winning return to the court on Wednesday, notching a confident 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over Lorenzi in one hour, 40 minutes.

He wasn't the only one in firing form in front of the Basel crowd on Wednesday, however, as Sock waltzed his way to a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Mannarino, needing only an hour to ease into the second round.
There, Sock will face off against Marcel Granollers, who defeated Henri Laaksonen on Tuesday to advance.
