The defending champion, del Potro is in top form coming in, having won the Japan Open in Tokyo and reached the final at the Shanghai Masters earlier this month. The world No. 5 has won eight of his last nine matches overall and will be the No. 1 seed in this year's draw.
Meanwhile, Federer, who has won a record five championships in Basel, will have to navigate his way through the draw as the No. 3 seed in the bottom half. The hometown hero certainly won't be lacking motivation this time around after losing to del Potro in an epic three-set final at the Swiss Indoors a year ago, with each of the final two sets requiring a tiebreaker.
Federer's compatriot and No. 4 seed Stanislas Wawrinka is another threat to win on the hard courts of Basel. The 28-year-old is up to No. 8 in the world rankings and is looking to earn points in an effort to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals in London at season's end. Four of the eight spots have already been taken, but Wawrinka can continue his charge with a strong performance in his home country.
Just ahead of Wawrinka in the race to qualify for the year-end championships is Czech star Tomas Berdych, who will be seeded second in this week's draw. Berdych has never won in Basel but is a powerful contender who plays his best tennis on hard courts.
