Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Rafael Nadal Dominates in Monte Carlo

Fernando Verdasco was enjoying one of the best weeks of his career this past week. Highlighted by a 6-2, 6-2 spanking of of 2009 finalist Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, Verdasco seemed poised to at least present a stern test to Nadal in the final. It never happened.
Verdasco summoned all of his powers, trying to dictate play as much as he could with his explosive lefty forehand. The problem for Verdasco was the Nadal speed. For eleven months whispers about the condition of the 23 year-old Nadal's knees raced through the tour and the tennis world.
Nay sayers predicted that the former world number one had seen his best days, and that his days of ruling the European clay had come to a close. Nadal took his lumps quietly. In less than 100 percent form he faltered in the semi final and final rounds of many tournaments in the past year.
It seemed to some that his physical playing style had finally caught up to him, at 23 his body could no longer take the beating. If anything, Monte Carlo 2010 was a statement. A declaration to the his critics, and to the rest of the field: Try me if you will.
The frightening aspect of this performance are the level of the opponents, and the scorelines. Nadal overcame ugly conditions to dispatch Juan Carlos Ferrero, a two-time Monte Carlo winner himself, in the quarterfinals.
The score was 6-4, 6-2. Ferrero had been the hottest clay courter in the world this year, racking up 14 straight clay court victories at one point. Ferrero got as close to victory as anyone would this week.
