The Frenchman, seeded fifth at the competition, made light work of his compatriot Lucas Pouille, running out a 6-0, 6-3 victor. Jiri Vesely, Aljaz Bedene and Victor Estrella Burgos, seeded sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, also made it through to Round 2 of the tournament.

Confident Start for Seeded Players
Mannarino came into this tournament with a lofty seeding of fifth, and he looks like a man beset on making the most of his high ranking after a comprehensive display against Pouille.
The world No. 39 was far too accomplished for his compatriot, setting the tone in a thoroughly lopsided opening set. Mannarino took it 6-0 in double-quick time, showcasing the gulf in class between the pair very early on. A win was never in doubt from that point, as the fifth seed coasted to an easy win.
Vesely, who is ranked as the sixth favourite for glory in Shenzhen, also laid down a marker with a strong opening display. The home crowd were well behind the Czech’s opponent, local wild card Ze Zhang, but despite a game effort from the Chinese player, Vesely eventually had too much class, taking a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
After a disappointing semi-final exit for Vesely at the Kaohsiung Challenger tournament last time out, where he was seeded first, the world No. 40 will be keen to turn in a better performance in Shenzhen. Encouragingly, the left-hander never looked in danger here.
