The world No. 2 lost the opening set against the big-serving American but fought back well to take the match in two-and-a-half hours.
Rafael Nadal came through a tough clash with Milos Raonic in two sets to take his place in the quarter-finals also. He will face Stan Wawrinka, who needed three sets to overcome Marin Cilic.
Top-seed Novak Djokovic had a much easier time of it, as he made the last eight after a routine straight-sets victory over Feliciano Lopez. But South Africa's Kevin Anderson knocked out Kei Nishikori.

The opening set between Murray and Isner was a serving masterclass, as neither player offered up a single break point. A tiebreak was needed to separate the pair, and Isner forced a mini-break with a deft drop shot and went on to seal the set.
Murray came out fighting in the second, but Isner held firm. Unlike the first set, both players conceded a couple of early break chances, but they were saved. The Scot finally converted a break point to go 5-4 up and served out the set to draw level and force a decider, per Sky Sports Tennis:
Isner's serve kept him in contention early in the third, the 30-year-old saving three break points in a nine-minute game to move 2-1 ahead. At 3-3, Murray went up a gear. He produced a quite magical lob to go 0-30 ahead on Isner's serve and sealed the break after some impressive defence.
The American almost broke straight back as he went into a 15-40 lead. But after Murray had saved one break point with a big second serve, he pulled a superlative backhand pass out of the bag to move to deuce.&n...
