However, without a doubt, Serena Williams is the greatest female tennis player to walk the planet.
Her record at this stage of her career is quite phenomenal. As things stand, she has won 15 Grand Slam singles titles, 13 doubles titles (all with sister Venus) and two in mixed doubles.
At the tender age of just 31 and with 2012 being one of the best years of her career, there is currently no reason to suggest that she won't win many more.
But, what sets her apart from all the other women who have played the game?
It is her ability to come back from adversity.
She has come back from the tragic death of her sister, countless injuries and a clot in her lung. She also effectively manages many other commitments away from the tennis court. And yet, she still manages to win Grand Slam trophies galore.
When people are writing her off, she is at her very best.
In the first half of 2012, she was showing signs that she could challenge for the biggest tournaments but wasn't quite able to go all the way. However, once she got to the grass of Wimbledon, all that changed. She was completely dominant as she won yet another title at SW19, before adding two more Olympic gold medals to her name and winning the U.S. Open.
Her Olympic record of four gold medals is just another statistic that makes her stand out from the crowd.
Although she is now 31 and relatively old compared to the next generation coming through, she shows no signs of slowing down.
