Serena Williams: Making a Case for Her Greatness

The meaning of the word betrays her prominence; it means calm and composed. For those who look at Serena, and point to her outburst at the US Open, no I’m not referring to that.
I’m referring to her mental toughness.
No matter which Serena turns up on court, Serena is so sure that she is the best in the world, so sure that she is No. 1, that she finds a way to win.
Some may say this is arrogance, and maybe there is a hint of it, but that only serves to heighten her already frightening powers, and is not completely untrue, judging by the number of majors she has won.
But without a doubt, she is the most mentally tough woman in the WTA. One only has to look at one match, the 2009 Wimbledon semi-final, which Serena won 6–7(4), 7–5, 8–6 after saving a match point.
The classic Serena we knew was not in this match, it was not Serena who dominated her opponent with her booming groundstrokes and serve.
This was a Serena in trouble.
Down a match point, her forehand having “gone on holiday to Hawaii,” on her second serve, and less than half of her forays to the net proving successful, Serena had a decision to make in that match point. Would she try to serve and volley? Or would she play safe?
You know what decision Serena made.
She charged the net and hit a backhand volley-winner that dashed Elena Dementieva’s hopes of entering a Grand Slam final for the first time in five years.
Would any other player in the world would charge the net like that?
No.
Could any other player could serve 89 aces in a tournament?
No.
Could any player in the world serve 1.6 aces a game?
No.
Could any player pull of as many comebacks as Serena?
No.
After that match, Serena then went on to beat her sister Venus the next ...
