Williams to Miss WTA Finals Monday, Oct. 17 The 35-year-old player provided a video message to her fans on WTA's Facebook page, explaining her withdrawal from the notable event.
Williams won her 22nd career Grand Slam this season at Wimbledon but fell to the No. 2 spot in the world rankings this summer after her loss in the semifinals of the U.S. Open.
The shoulder injury was a hindrance throughout the 2016 season. After struggling in the Summer Olympics in Rio, she withdrew from the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati prior to the U.S. Open in August.
While the American was able to battle to the semifinals before falling in New York, the shoulder injury once again kept her from competition. In September, Williams dropped out of the Wuhan Open and China Open.
Despite the hope to play in the WTA Finals in Singapore, it appears fans will have to keep waiting to see the return of one of the top players in the history of the sport.
Williams also missed the year-end tournament last season but won the event three years in a row from 2012 to 2014 and has five titles overall.
Angelique Kerber becomes the likely favorite as the current No. 1 player in the world with 2016 wins at the Australian Open and U.S. Open.
