— ESPNTennis (@ESPNTennis) January 15, 2013 While it appears Williams has avoided a major injury and rolled to an expected opening-round win—6-0, 6-0—it's worth noting that she isn't quite out of hot water in search of her third consecutive major title.
Ankle injuries often flare up overnight after the injured party stops moving for a while and loses their adrenaline.
I'm obviously not a doctor, but it will be more crucial to see how Williams responds in the morning, as opposed to her first-round win.
On the plus side, if Williams advances to the next round, she'll luckily have a few days of rest before she takes on the winner of Magdalena Rybarikova and Garbine Muguruza. If she is forced to continue the tournament at less than 100 percent, however, a run to the semifinals just got a lot easier for Petra Kvitova and others.
Whatever happens, we'll be sure to keep you updated when more is known regarding the talented veteran's injury.
