BBC Sport noted their withdrawal, which came after both Williams sisters had already been eliminated from the singles draw during the first week:
Following the match, both Serena and Venus issued statements (via ESPN.com):
"I am heartbroken I'm not able to continue in the tournament," Serena said in a statement. "I thought I could rally this morning, because I really wanted to compete, but this bug just got the best of me."

"Unfortunately Serena has been feeling unwell for the past few days and she just couldn't play to her potential today," Venus said in a statement. "I'm really proud of her for trying because we just love playing doubles together. We are looking forward to coming back to Wimbledon next year."

Clearly something wasn't right health-wise.
The Williams sisters tried to play on, but they dropped the first three games and then decided to call it quits. The team of Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Voegele will advance to third round after meeting far less resistance than expected.
It's unclear exactly what was bothering Williams. She will probably go through a more detailed evaluation than the one she received on court to see what the problem is, but the hopes of adding another trophy to the case is over.
