Serena Williams Defeats Maria Sharapova to Win 6th Sony Open Title

The win, which is Williams' 11th straight over rival Sharapova, elevates her above Steffi Graf to make her the winningest female player in the history of the Premier event. The loss is Sharapova's fifth in the tournament final since 2005.
Williams, who coming in was one of only two women to have won five times in South Florida, has made the final eight times in Miami since 2002, winning five times from 2002 to 2008 and finishing as runner-up in 1999 and 2009.
The victory gives the 31-year-old American her second singles title of 2013, as she won the WTA Brisbane International in lead-up to the Australian Open back in January. She now boasts an 18-2 singles record this season.
Williams looks to be cruising once again, and that bodes well for her heading into the clay-court season. She's won the French Open just once her career, defeating her sister Venus at Roland Garros way back in 2002.
For the 25-year-old Sharapova, the disappointment in Key Biscayne continues as the world No. 2 has now dropped five final matches at the Premier event.
Williams, who has 15 Grand Slam titles over the course of her legendary career, has dominated her Russian rival since 2005 and is now 12-2 against Sharapova in singles all-time.
