Serena Williams Announecd WTA 2012 Player of the Year Following Epic Season

The American earned this honor after winning two Grand Slams at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, as well as a Gold Medal in the Summer Olympics.
Williams has won the award four times, previously winning in 2002, 2008 and 2009. According to USA Today, only Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova have won more often.
This was a bit of a comeback season for Williams after rehabbing from a foot injury throughout most of 2011. She missed three straight Grand Slam tournaments from the end of 2010 into the beginning of the next season.
After losing in the first round of the French Open to Virginie Razzano, many thought the 30-year-old's career was coming to an end.
However, the 15-time Grand Slam winner regained her serving skill and completely turned around her season.
She swept through Wimbledon, winning both the singles' tournament as well as doubles with her sister Venus.
Williams then kept the momentum into the London Games, dominating throughout. She defeated Victoria Azarenka in straight sets in the semifinals. In the finals, she only allowed Maria Sharapova to win a single game.
Things were not much different once she returned to the hard surface. She defeated Azarenka once again in Flushing Meadows to win her fourth-career U.S. Open.
Serena Williams is currently the No. 3 ranked women's tennis player in the world, according to the WTA Rankings. However, she competed in fewer tournaments than anyone in the Top 20.
The veteran tennis player proved doubters wrong throughout the year and once again looks like one of the best competitors in the world.
If Williams can keep this up, it will not be surprising if she can win another award in 2013.
