Every year in late May, the tennis season receives a welcome shot of adrenaline.

It’s all about Paris in the spring time, it’s all about tennis’ ultimate test of physical and mental endurance, it’s all about the French Open.

Whenever we’re talking clay court tennis,  glorious images of the past flood the mind. The crushed red brick, the sliding (or slipping), the caked orange socks, the delightfully filthy combatants, the image of the champion on his back experiencing the ultimate euphoria the comes part and parcel with winning the Championship. Revelling in the knowledge that he has accomplished perhaps the most difficult task in the sport.

This year there are many pockets of uncertainty concerning the male contenders for the title. It seems that just like every year since 2005, the odds on favorite will be none other than Rafael Nadal.

On a quest to perhaps become the single most decorated clay court champion of all time, Nadal has already captured four of the last five titles in Paris.

The only mark on his record coming in a strange round of 16 encounters with the unlikely Swede Robin Soderling. All we can take from that match was that Soderling played the best tennis of his life, and executed a perfect game plan. Nadal was off, and the Spaniard didn’t play another event until the North American summer hard court swing.

Needless to say, Nadal has rebounded beautifully. He is 15-0 on clay in 2010 with wins over heavy weights such as Fernando Verdasco, David Ferrer, and Roger Federer. Nadal appears to be healthy, playing well and rested. It he plays 80 percent of his capability he should win his fifth title and inch even closer to the Borg record of six.
