With eight of the top nine players in the world rankings in a draw filled with 56 quality players, this is certain to be an exciting week of action.
Novak Djokovic enters the tournament as the favorite after winning the event three times in his career. The No. 1 player in the world is coming off a win at Wimbledon, but he has not competed in over a month since.
Additionally, he discussed the problems with this being his first hard-court tournament in a long time, via Michael Traikos of the National Post:
I haven’t played a hard-court match since the Miami final last year. That’s the reason why I arrived here yesterday. One thing is to practice, the other is to play an official match. I’m looking forward to the first match even though the draw is terrible for me.
This "terrible" draw could include French stars Gael Monfils, Jeremy Chardy or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first few rounds, in addition to Andy Murray possibly lining up in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, this tournament is loaded with challengers even without Rafael Nadal, who withdrew with a wrist injury.
Roger Federer has a good chance of at least reaching the finals with a favorable draw, as noted by Courtney Nguyen of Sports Illustrated:
With Djokovic, Murray, and Wawrinka all the top half, he has a very workable draw to make his second ATP Masters 1000 of the season. David Ferrer is the top seed in his quarter, with Tomas Berdych and last year's finalist Milos Roanic the top seeds in the other quarter. The last time Federer won the Rogers Cup was in 2006 when it was hosted in Toronto, though he has not played the tournament the last two years.
