Roger Federer: Why Tennis Star Is Poised for Deep Australian Open Run

Yesterday I discussed Federer's difficult matchups ahead at the Aussie Open, with the likes of Bernard Tomic and possibly Milos Raonic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lying ahead, and while I believe he still has an uphill battle to climb, one thing is for sure: Federer is prepared.
According to India's NDTV, the tennis star has chosen to forgo warm-up tournaments in order to be at his best when the Australian Open begins:
I purposely didn't play a lead-up tournament so that I'd be fresh for the beginning, hopefully going deep into the tournament. That's the goal obviously. I think it's nice sometimes doing it slightly different than every year the same thing. Otherwise it feels like a deja vu and that's not always a good thing.
This is one of the best approaches for the 31-year-old Swiss player to take. With most of his competitors being younger and possessing more stamina, Federer is doing the smartest thing he can by resting his body for the Aussie Open.
It's not like Federer hasn't been training though, as Yahoo! Sports reports, he has been working out while spending time with his family leading up to the tournament.
As for if anyone is questioning his layoff, Federer told Yahoo! Sports:
"Playing well at the right moments only comes with playing enough matches. Not like I haven't played for six months. I'm ready to go and eager. That to me right now dominates."
By the sound of it, no one should be inquiring about Federer's mental or physical state heading into the tournament.
As the owner of four Australian Open titles, Federer should not be counted out as a potential winner in 2013, nor should his opponents be overlooked.
