Roger Federer: Was His Era Weaker Than the Last?

After all, how could you measure a weak era?
You could judge by slam, masters and title wins, but what if the low numbers were because the person who supposedly capitalised on the ‘weak era’ was just too dominant? Few would doubt that Federer controlled men’s tennis for a period of time at a level that might never be matched.
But how much of that domination could be attributed to a weak era or simply sheer brilliance?
Many are calling Federer's rivals—Safin, Roddick and Hewitt (he should have all the talk about weak eras)—second rate compared to Djokovic, Murray and Del Potro.
But clearly, that is just wrong and ignorant.
They ridicule them and cast them as second rate because next to Federer at his absolute best, they could not even hold a candle to him. They have declined from their primes in the early to mid 2000’s. We should be reminded that Safin, Rodddick and Hewitt were all world number ones and with the exception of Roddick, have won multiple slams.
These men all have a great claim to fame in the tennis world.
Safin, one of the hardest ball strikers ever, was the one who knocked out Djokovic in 2008.
Roddick is owner of the world’s fastest serve, and in his prime, the world’s best.
Hewitt is a two-time major champion, who at his peak, had the speed and superior baseline play of Agassi with the fiery competitive spirit of John McEnroe.
At their prime, they were every bit as good as Del Potro, Murray and Djokovic, who will, when they grow old, be derided and painted as second class players.
Because when at his best, Federer would have destroyed them all just as easily he did with Roddick and Co....
