Roger Federer cruised past Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets (6-3, 6-4, 6-4) Saturday to advance to the fourth round of the 2015 U.S. Open.

The 17-time major champion made a statement by winning the warm-up event in Cincinnati with victories over Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic in the final two rounds. He's clearly carried that strong play into the season's final Grand Slam event.

Federer triumphed five consecutive times in New York starting in 2004. Although he's reached the final just once since that streak ended, he still finds a comfort zone at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, as noted by Rachel Cohen of the Associated Press.

"I've always enjoyed conditions here, the balls, the speed of the court, the atmosphere in the arena," Federer said. "It's always worked very well for me. I think this year is another good year. Doing the right things on the court."

He immediately took control of the first set against Kohlschreiber, who he's now beaten in all 10 career meetings. After an easy hold in the opening game, he earned a quick break and held again to make it 3-0 before the veteran German even had a chance to settle in.

Given the way Federer is serving this summer, that probably felt like an insurmountable lead. Sure enough, he held the rest of the way to grab the early advantage. David Law of BT Sport highlighted the Swiss star's success against players from Germany on the sport's biggest stages:

Kohlschreiber started to make more inroads on the second seed's serve in the second set. That included the first break of Federer in more than 70 games dating back to the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic. It marked his second long streak of season, via Carl Bialik of FiveThirtyEight:

Federer did get the break right back, however, and regained control of the second set. The No. 29 seed had a couple more looks late in the set to get back on...
