It’s smaller than average at around 90 inches, smaller than average on tour.
And he uses natural gut strings.
His racquet has one main advantage, that it provides more control on his groundstrokes, and improves his volleys.
But the small racquet head and sweet spot mean that he loses power on his strokes, and that he cannot create as much spin. It also makes mishits more common.
I think that it might be time for him to upgrade his racquet.
It’s time for Federer to get off his high horse and submit to the technology of the decade, Nadal and all the others have done it, switching to Babolat’s and poly strings in order to improve their game.
No matter how much it may seem like succumbing to temptation, he must change his racquet and make it bigger, and use this poly strings.
Take Sam Stosur for example.
Here in Australia, we heard a lot about her debilitating Lyme disease and her subsequent comeback. It always struck me how much she had improved and how much spin she had added to her game. When an interviewer asked her about anything she had changed, she said that she had changed racquets and started using Babolat and poly strings.
That made it possible for her to start using spin effectively.
Federer must do the same.
Right now, he’s being outhit by the new generation of tall, jack of all trades, 100 mph forehand crushers.
He needs that extra power boost, even if it will cut down his control and prodigious volleying ability.
His backhand will gain some much needed bite, and will become less of a liability.
His forehand will reach new heights.
