Roger Federer: The Man to Beat, Does He Have a Crack at the World No. 1 Ranking?

Since Wimbledon, Federer has won 1,355 more ranking points than his rival Nadal, more titles, more matches and has been very consistent in all tournaments.
And of course he ended the year making the top eight players of the ATP looking like they were just pawns. The only exception being Nadal, who’s 2010 season ended in a loss to Federer,
Nadal has adjusted his game and reduced his topspin, substituting his main weapons against Federer with depth and pace, while that might work for other ATP players, he has muted his powers against Federer.
It’s a wise move, no one should tailor their game to defeat their rival.
But in a matchup between them, because of these changes, he would still retain the status of favourite, but only just.
His two consecutive wins over Federer in their charity match and in Abu Dhabi should be taken lightly, with nothing on the line, and being close matches, they were not a real barometer as to how the rivalry is going to shape up this year.
Nadal seems like he running a little bit low on energy, whether that is his illness or not, I won’t speculate, but his loss to Davydenko in Doha was just lacklustre.
His lack of match play has disrupted preparations for the Australian Open, and Federer has had the perfect start with his win in Doha. Playing aggressively, targeting second serves with great returns, making way more winners than unforced errors; he was playing at a very high level.
Which leaves us to this question.
Can Federer get back to world number one.
A lot of this depends on his results in the Australian Open and Nadal’s own performance obviously.
Should he defend his Australian Open title, it would remove his only hurdle until Canada.
