Roger Federer Rolls, Andy Murray Escapes in French Open First Round Action

After going winless throughout the clay season, Federer rebounded to defeat Peter Luczak of Australia in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 on Monday.
Committing just 11 unforced errors and facing just one break point, Federer easily dispatched of the Aussie, showing no ill effects from his recent struggles on clay courts.
"If it was anyone else, I'd be getting pretty angry," Luczak told the Associated Press. "He just had me on a string and just was toying with me at the end. I think he was enjoying it."
Third-seeded Novak Djokovic also advanced easily to the second round, defeating Evgeny Korolev 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
While most of the top seeds experienced little trouble in advancing to the second round, No. 4 Andy Murray struggled in a five-set victory over opponent Richard Gasquet of France.
After losing the first two sets, Murray rebounded in the final three to defeat Gasquet 4-6, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. Although Gasquet appeared to be in control of the match early on, he began to show signs of weakness in the third set and even received treatment on his legs after the fourth.
While it would appear that Murray could be vulnerable in the second round, his opponent will be Juan Ignacio Chela, who Murray easily defeated 6-3, 6-3 at the Matua Madrilena Masters in Madrid, Spain a little over a week ago.
As conditions at Roland Garros will be similar, it is likely that the result will be as well.
Although Federer came up empty throughout the clay season, experiencing a couple of inexplicable early-round exits along the way, he appeared in control in his victory over Luczak on Monday. He will now move ahead to face Alejandro Falla of Colombia in the second round of his French Open title defense.
