Roger Federer out of Monte Carlo: And More News from Friday

As players moved on to the semifinals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters series, one big shakeup is the loss of Roger Federer, who shockingly lost today against Jurgen Melzer, 6-4, 6-4. The world No. 9 defeated the world No. 3, and now moves on to his first ever ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semifinal, where he will take on the fourth-seeded David Ferrer.
With such a shocking loss for Federer, he is headed back to Switzerland, where he says, “I'll be back in Switzerland training on clay. Hopefully the weather is going to be okay so I get some chances to hit outdoors. I'm looking forward to going back home.”
Federer went on to say, “I wish I could have gone further in the tournament. I got three matches. I'm pretty happy. […] I don't think I played terrible. Obviously, it was still the first week of clay, so I don't expect myself to play my very best. I think it's been a solid tournament.”
Jurgen has never beaten Federer, and this win makes his career record 1-3. Of the win, Melzer had to say, “I mean, I have beaten Rafa last year. I have beaten Nole. So this was the one missing. I'm very happy I actually did it today."
In other news from a day of straight-sets and few other mix ups, Rafael Nadal took out Ivan Ljubicic 6-1, 6-3, Andy Murray defeated Frederico Gil 6-2, 6-1 and David Ferrer beat Viktor Troicki in what was the second-closest match of the day in a not-so-close, 6-3, 6-3.
