Roger Federer, My Romeo, Romeo, Where Art Thou? Rafael Nadal Asks

Roger Federer isn’t dead. He is undead. He is that creature that roams the fog-enveloped marshes where other dead things slowly rot in the ground. When the sun has sunk into the endless horizon and unspeakable terrors creep in the darkness, raggedy Roger saunters through a leafless forest, searching for his soul.

What else would he be searching for? He has a living body, it still seems, and he walks amongst the living, but there was that inexplicable soulless look in his eyes yesterday. It was that look that let every one of his fans down, not the loss itself. For a man gifted with a generational talent and for a man who devoted his life to perfecting his skills, to walk out onto the court as the living dead was a disappointment.

Or who knows, maybe his other fans are not so disappointed, and it’s just me. So call me the unhappy child of the Roger love affair with tennis or maybe, the rebellious slave of Federer’s success.

I am willing to take all the abuse forthcoming for so humanizing Federer; yes, because can one dehumanize a "hero" of the sport? A Hercules of tennis? We must remember he was not human—as a newborn he was dipped into an enchanted river, save perhaps for a spot on his Achilles heel. So no, of course you cannot dehumanize something that is not human, you must humanize it first.

I was disappointed in this loss to Rafa, not because it is a loss per se but in the manner that Roger lost. There is a way to lose and then there is a way to lose. Roger just didn't show up for that match. I didn't know who that man was there on the court in Roger's body, but it definitely wasn't Roger Federer.

Maybe aliens abducted him the night before in a close encounter of the some kind, or maybe he mentally expired prior to the match and a soulless Roger Federer look-alike zombie showed up with a tennis racket in its hand...I don't know, but I do know that that wasn't Roger Federer.
