Roger Federer: Is His Wimbledon Performance a Look Into His Future?

Today, Roger Federer was eliminated in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Tomas Berdych ousted the champ with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win this afternoon. Even though Federer blamed some “undisclosed” injuries for his performance, the question remains: Will he ever be back on top?

Having won 16 Grand Slam singles titles during his career, Federer is without argument one of the best to have ever played the game of tennis, but he seems to be making his inevitable descent. While a quarterfinals result at Wimbledon is respectable, this is the first time in eight years that Federer has not advanced further.

After this year’s Wimbledon performance, Roger Federer finds himself ranked No. 3 amongst male tennis players.

This seems like a pretty stellar achievement by normal standards, but we must keep in mind that this is the first time that Federer has been ranked lower than No. 2 since November of 2003.

In his previous Grand Slam appearance at the French Open, Federer also found himself with some extra time on his hands. He was also eliminated in the quarterfinals, this time by Robin Soderling.

Though Federer says that he will be ready to dominate the men’s tour like he has in the past, we may be witnessing an unfortunate trend for the tennis phenom.

Although this is mere speculation, Federer seemed almost defensive during his post-match interview after losing to Berdych. Anyone would be disappointed after losing such a match, but he refused to give his opponent sufficient credit. Federer blamed his own game and injuries for his loss, but let’s face it—anyone who can beat Roger Federer (even on a bad day) is pretty damn good.

Time will tell if Federer will recover from these injuries and get back to playing tennis like a champion, but we have to wonder if his outstanding career is traveling downhill.
