Federer Pulls Out of Madrid Masters Monday, May 2 "I’d rather play it safe and get ready for Rome," Federer said in a press conference on Monday while announcing he was pulling out of the Madrid Masters, per Wilks. "If I can’t play Rome it’s not the end of the world, but hopefully I’ll get to play."
He added, "I was always going to wait for Madrid's result to decide about Rome but now Rome is a goal. Let's see how my body reacts."
As for the injury, Federer noted that it was "normal back things I've had in past" and added, "I'm OK with it, at least I know what it is."
Federer underwent arthroscopic surgery on Feb. 3 to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, and he was scheduled to return to the court March 25 for second-round play at the Miami Open in Key Biscayne, Florida.
However, Federer fell ill with a stomach virus and was forced to withdraw before clashing with Juan Martin del Potro.
Although Federer captured six singles titles and posted a record of 59-10 during the 2015 season, he once again failed to snap his Grand Slam drought.
The 34-year-old hasn't won a Grand Slam since he triumphed over Andy Murray in the 2012 Wimbledon final, and his 2016 season started in disappointing fashion with a semifinal exit at the hands of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinals.
Time certainly isn't on Federer's side now that he's in his mid-30s, so staying healthy beyond this latest setback will be of the utmost importance with Slam season in full swing.
