Roger Federer Downs Nikolay Davydenko: A Boost for the Australian Open

Absolutely brilliant play.
Nikolay Davydenko played a little tentative, going for the backhand even when the forehand was wide open at times, but he played well, especially seeing as he was coming back from an injury layoff.
As Federer said in his post-match interview, “Nikolay’s a top-10 player, he’s better than his ranking now.”
But better than Roger Federer? No.
Well, at least not today.
Roger was moving well, hitting cleanly, had good rhythm going on his serve and ground strokes, and looked in control on serve, not giving Nikolay even a single break point opportunity.
The only highlight was seeing Nikolay save six set points on his serve in the first set.
Federer hit 25 winners to just 15 unforced errors, and was very aggressive at the net. At one point in the second set, he was winning 100 percent of his encounters.
Federer will now head to the Australian Open with confidence as he looks to win a 17th Grand Slam title.
"It does feel great," said the 2005, 2006 and now 2011 Doha champion.
"I can't believe the season is under way and I'm already on the board with a title."
If Federer plays like that at the Australian Open, I would guarantee a semifinal placing, with a definite shot at defending his title.
With Nadal a bit sick, and perhaps a little under prepared, who knows?
He could meet Andy Murray early at the quarters like last year if Soderling defeats Roddick in Brisbane.
If so, he’s in for one hell of a tough match. But I’m not complaining.
It looks like the Australian Open just heated up.
