Roger Federer Advances In Basel at Swiss Indoor Tournament

The top-seeded Swiss took the first step toward regaining the crown he lost to Novak Djokovic last November. Federer will face either Janko Tipsarevic or Denis Istomin for a place in the quarterfinals.
The second-seeded Djokovic will face Latvian power merchant Ernests Gulbis in the opening round. Gulbis, who upset Federer on the red clay of Rome earlier this year, withdrew from last week's Vienna tournament citing personal reasons.
Sixteen-time Grand Slam champion Federer, who won Stockholm to tie Pete Sampras' mark of 64 career ATP titles, can surpass Sampras for fourth place on the Open Era title list if he wins Basel.
It was the third title of the season for the 29-year-old Federer, who swept Andy Murray in the Australian Open final in January to capture his 16th major championship. Federer defeated Mardy Fish to win Cincinnati in August. He was runner-up to Murray in the Toronto and Beijing Masters 1000 finals.
The ATP 500 tournament offers a loaded field that includes the second-seeded Djokovic, Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych, former finalist David Nalbandian and Americans Andy Roddick, John Isner and Sam Querrey.
