Day one of the 2014 BNP Paribas Open kicked off on Thursday with 16 men's matches. Several long time tour veterans were in play and plenty of Americans. The veterans performed well, but the Americans were not quite as successful.

Recap of the Americans

Nine American men played Thursday, including six matches against each other. They finished the day with an overall record of 4-5 and 1-2 against other players from other countries.

Tim Smyczek kicked off the day with a victory over fellow American Jack Sock, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. He will take on No. 28 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov in Round 2.

In another American clash, 35-year-old Michael Russell took down Donald Young, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Fourteenth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny will be waiting for him in the second round.

The Frenchman Jeremy Chardy took down Rhyne Williams, 7-6(5), 7-5. Williams fought hard to make it close, but he ultimately could not come away with the victory.

After receiving a wild card into the event, Ryan Harrison came through with a win over Andrey Golubev, 6-4, 7-5. He will take on No.13 seed Fabio Fognini next.

The final match of the day was another American battle. Sam Querrey came out victorious over Alex Kuznetsov, 6-3, 6-3. He had lost five of his previous six matches before this win.

Hopefully this win will give confidence to Querrey, as he has really struggled since the Australian Open. He takes on Italian Andreas Seppi in the next round.

End of the Ginepri Cinderella Story

The other American in play on Tuesday was Robby Ginepri. After qualifying for an ATP-level tournament for the first time in about a year, Ginepri could not keep the magic going against Paul-Henri Mathieu.
