Rafael Nadal: Player of the Month for April 2010

There's something about the month of April that suits Rafael Nadal just fine. The clay suddenly appears like a magic carpet under his feet; his bandanna seems to fall out of place slightly more than on hard-courts, and his forehand readily jumps to the outer reaches of the court a tad bit more.

In fact, April has historically been such a good month for Nadal that he's captured 11 of his record tying 17 Masters 1000 titles during the 30-day span.

Losing a total of 49 games in winning the Monte Carlo and Rome events, Nadal lost one set throughout 10 matches to claim the 37th, and 38th titles of his career.

Nadal's perennial April shower also brought forth a conflict of interest between his fan base and the competitors on the ATP World Tour. While the legion of Rafa-holics usually strut their stuff throughout this time of year, the Tour faithful remained occupied with trying to scrape together any adequate game plan possible to shake his immovable momentum.

Gliding through the draw in Monaco, Nadal was adamant on diffusing the dark cloud of not winning at title for 11 months. His demonstrative form in the Principality was comparable to his 2008 victory at the French Open—where he trounced Roger Federer in the final.

While watching Nadal throughout the clay-court season, I've found myself wondering if his form was possibly getting better; has his level of play remained the same, or are the rest of players not even remotely close to challenging what he has hidden in the back pocket of his Bermuda style shorts?

To be honest, I'd say it's an even blend of all three trains of thought. Nadal's serve is definitely better—he lost serve twice throughout Monte Carlo and Rome.
