Gerald Melzer is only nineteen years old and has already enjoyed a career high ranking of 825.
Why is Gerald Melzer being featured here? Is it because those who have seen him play marvel at his forehand slice? Maybe he has lightening footwork? Are there people touting him to be the next Nadal or Federer?
To all these questions, the answer is "very unlikely."
Gerald Melzer is featured mainly because he is tenuously holding on to the very last spot at the bottom of the men's single ranking system.
He faces being in the delicate position of trying to hold on to that very last bottom spot. To lose his ranking would see him drop off to obscurity. By gaining ranking points, he would also remain undetectable among the mass of upcoming young tennis players or the outgoing senior ones who have missed their common sense to retire already.
In 2010, Melzer raked in an incredible $236 of prize money bringing his career high earnings to a total of $8387.
With these paltry earnings, Melzer has had to rely on his paper route money and has worked hard to keep his main sponsor—The Linz Fish Market—to stay with him.
Melzer still lives with his parents, occupying a bedroom in the basement. To defend his rank, Melzer will be required to lose the next five of his eight upcoming matches.
"It is a definite honour to occupy the last spot and I have plans to defend it over the next five years. People think finishing last is easy but there is pressure to calculate and be exactly precise about how many matches you can lose before you win one by accident." he said.
Melzer is ranked 1790 with his arch rival Andrea Stucchi of Italy just ahead of him at 1789.
