American Serena Williams led the highlights by winning her first individual gold medal over Russia’s Maria Sharapova in dominant fashion. Williams wasted no time in adding the accomplishment to her résumé, beating Sharapova 6-0, 6-1.
In the bronze medal match, world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka earned a medal for Belarus by defeated Maria Kirilenko of Russia.
The women’s singles competition ended, but the day was not done for Williams and Kirilenko, as the two faced off the in the women’s doubles semifinals.
Williams, along with her sister Venus, defeated Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova by a score of 7-5, 6-4.
In the men’s doubles competition, Mike and Bob Bryan earned another gold medal for the United States. The twins defeated Michael Llodra and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the gold medal match 7-6, 6-4.
France earned two medals in men’s doubles, after Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet bested Spain’s David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez.
Those were the only medals handed out on the day, but the mixed doubles competition produced a finals matchup.
Andy Murray and Laura Robson earned a chance to win a gold medal in front of an enthusiastic British crowd at Wimbledon by beating Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. They then bested Germany’s Chistopher Kas and Sabine Lisicki 6-1, 6-7 (7), 10-7.
In the other semifinal, Azarenka and Max Mirnyi defeated Mike Bryan and Lisa Raymond 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 to meet Murray and Robson.
In tomorrow’s action, Roger Federer will face Murray at Wimbledon, with a title on the line once again in the men’s singles gold medal match.
