Nishikori cruised to a win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas, while Cilic didn't have it any harder against Grigor Dimitrov. Edmund beat Jordan Thompson, but Jack Sock lost in two sets against Japan's Taro Daniel.
Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray will be in action on Sunday.

Nishikori stole the show in his routine two-set win over Ramos-Vinolas, dominating from the baseline and losing just six games on his way to the next round.
The 26-year-old had a fast start to the match, and everything seemed to go his way early. He even managed to win a point after dropping his racket on serve, to the disbelief of the crowd and Ramos-Vinolas.
Per Record's Jose Morgado, the fans seemed to love what they were seeing:
The first set was hardly a contest, but Ramos-Vinolas put up a better fight in the second, as the two split the first eight games. Nishikori found a break in the ninth, however, and easily served out the match from there.
Nishikori played some superb tennis, but fans watching the other men's match going on at the same time will have noticed the incredible form his next opponent showed. John Millman double-bageled Ricardas Berankis, to the disbelief of Morgado:
"The Mailman" needed just 25 minutes to grab the first set, and less than a half-hour later, Berankis' Olympics were over.
Sock's Olympics also didn't last long, as the American talent struggled against Daniel, losing a heartbreaker in two sets. As shared by WTA insider's Courtney Nguyen, he later confirmed he felt ill entering the match, explaining why he looked so sluggish:
